Who pays the High Income Child Benefit Charge?
Anyone whose adjusted net income is over £60,000 in a tax year when they or their partner get Child Benefit. If both partners are over the threshold, the higher earner pays.
How much is the charge?
1% of the Child Benefit for every £200 of adjusted net income over £60,000. At £80,000 or more you pay back all of it.
How much Child Benefit is it for 2 children?
£27.05 a week for the eldest plus £17.90 for each additional child: £44.95 a week, about £2,337.40 over 52 weeks.
What counts as adjusted net income?
Total taxable income including savings interest and dividends, before Personal Allowances, less reliefs such as pension contributions and Gift Aid. Paying more into a pension can lower it.
Can I avoid the charge?
You can opt out of receiving Child Benefit payments and not pay the charge, while keeping National Insurance credits for State Pension. Check GOV.UK before deciding.
